U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) tenant commands and support services are invited to participate in the Command Festival of Trees Contest sponsored by the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Guam.

The contest is a tree-decorating competition held at the Charles King Fitness Center (CKFC) from now until Jan. 2.

“The Festival of Trees is all for the Christmas spirit and getting the commands to enjoy the season in a friendly and fun competition,” said Nate Livingston, special events assistant for MWR Guam.

Livingston said commands don’t have to worry about buying the trees as MWR provides it.

“All the commands have to do is come by the gym and decorate the trees we put out for them,” he said.

According to Livingston, there have been eight commands and support services that have decorated their trees at the gym so far. His favorite tree so far is USS Chicago’s (SSN 721) tree.

“They filled their tree with many things from Chicago including sport teams such as Chicago Bulls, Blackhawks and White Sox,” he said. He added the most resourceful tree he has seen so far is from the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS).

“The NMCRS put out paper bags as presents to show how to save and spend money, their way to show they are their here on base to help,” he added.

Livingston said the winning command of the competition will receive a $500 MWR gift card that can be used at all MWR facilities around the world and the MWR Christmas tree totem.

“The Christmas tree totem is a trophy paddle that the winning command will hold onto all year until a new winner is selected at next year’s competition,” he said.

The winner of the competition is not based on creativity but by the number of votes received throughout the duration of the competition.

“Any one person can put as many votes they want into the ballot box,” he said. “If a person wants to fill 20-50 ballots for their favorite tree, they can do so.”

The winners for the competition will be announced Jan. 2.
