Guam gears up for 1st international marathon

The Guam Visitors Bureau along with the Pacific Islands Club and United Airlines will host the inaugural Guam International Marathon (with half-marathon, and 10- and 5-kilometer races) on April 7. So gear up runners – and bring your family and friends!

Even would-be writers can get into the act. Sponsors are offering a chance to win free registration for the marathon and two nights stay at the Pacific Islands Club for eligible entrants who submit a story about their favorite place on Guam to Guam.Stripes.com by March 13. (See the ad on page 30 for details.)

Registration fees for the marathon, half marathon and 5-, and 10-k runs are $90, $80 and $50, respectively, prior to March 9. There is an additional $10 charge ($5 for the 5- and 10-k races) afterward and a $10 discount ($20-$25 for the 5- and 10-k races) for Guam residents and members of the U.S. military.

Runners must be at least 14 years old on the day of the race to participate in the marathon and half marathon. All runners age 17 or young must have parental or guardian consent to participate.

Registration for the race is open until April 3. Packet pick up is April 6 at the Guam Visitors Bureau from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Race bibs, timing chips and T-shirts will be available for pick up at Pacific Islands Club Guam Tasa and Isa Banquet Rooms on April 5 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and April 6 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be no race day registration or check-in.

The marathon starts at 4 a.m. followed by the half marathon at 4:30 a.m., the 5-k run at 5:15 a.m. and the 10-k run at 5:20 a.m. the course closes at 11 a.m. Warm ups begin at 3:30 a.m. for the marathon and half marathon, and 4:45 a.m. for the 5- and 10-k races.

All races start and finish on Pale San Vitores Road in front of Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Park at Ypao Beach, Tumon. Roads will close for the marathon at 2 a.m. at the Hilton and

Proa intersections and 3:30 a.m. at the Marriott intersection.

Organized by Pacific Islands Club Guam, this year’s official sponsors are ACS Trust Corporation, Bank of Guam, DS Gallery Guam, Nanbo Insurancem 76/Circle K, Take Care.

The races will be conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations of the JAAF and the race organizer.
