ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam -- Being a mother in the military can be a difficult job, and Mother's Day is a day to recognize mothers and all they do for their children.

Staff Sgt. Kirsten Roberts, 36th Force Support Squadron Gateway Inn front desk supervisor, balances a life of being an imagination pilgrim with her daughter and serving on active duty in the military.

During the week, Roberts finds herself caught up in the stresses of work and becoming a certified lactation consultant. But she tries to find as much time as possible with her husband and her daughter.

"We make time for Celeste," Roberts said. "We make her a priority."

When Roberts was working swing shift, she found it was difficult to stay close to her daughter. She would spend her one-hour lunch break with her husband and daughter, whether it would be just strolling around The Exchange at Andersen Air Force Base or going to a playground. She was dedicated to making life as normal as possible for her daughter.

Even with work and training going on, Roberts never stopped waiting for her days off. She looked forward to them because she knew she could spend time with her daughter.

"Always constant change whether you want it or not," Roberts said. "But you can definitely be a wonderful mother and a great Airman at the same time."

Michele Phillips, spouse of a Sailor attached to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25, also agreed there were some stressors with being a military-affiliated mother, but said it makes time with children more memorable.

"Mother's Day is a time of remembrance of what it means to be a mother," Phillips said. "When you are a military dependent, it is different when your other half deploys, but you learn to make every moment special with your child."

Mother's Day is celebrated this year on Sunday, May 12. Here's a list of Mother's Day events happening here on Andersen:
