NAVFAC Marianas Ultimaniacs crowned Captain’s Cup Frisbee champions
Sailors and Coastguardsmen participated in the Captain’s Cup Ultimate Frisbee Tournament at the Blue Jacket field on U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) Jan 9.
Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Marianas’ Ultimaniacs went undefeated in the three-day tournament winning the championship game against the U.S. Coast Guard 13-4.
“It feels good, it feels real good,” said Construction Electrician 1st Class (SCW) Joseph Soriano, of NAVFAC Marianas. “This is my first season with this team. I didn’t know what to expect, besides they are really good.”
Soriano said the Ultimate Frisbee Tournament was a great way to keep in shape and stay within Navy fitness standards.
“This is a great workout,” he said. “We are constantly running throughout the match with no breaks until halftime and the end of the game.”
The U.S Coast Guard on Guam combined their units on island to make their ultimate Frisbee team and came in second place in the tournament.“It was fun, a great battle against the other teams,” said Lt. j.g. Luis Rivera, of U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam.
Rivera said he enjoys the physical activity in team events for the Captain’s Cup and individual sport tournaments.
“These sport events are great for your physical fitness, anything that has you constantly running and sprinting is a great workout,” he said. “Ultimate Frisbee is harder than football giving much more workout on your legs.”
Though the Captain’s Cup Frisbee tournament has ended, individuals interested in the sport can participate in pick-up games at the Blue Jacket Field every Thursday at 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/ULTIMANIACS.
