Public can comment on draft environmental assessment from May 8-27
NIMITZ HILL, Guam - The Navy in partnership with the Guam Power Authority (GPA) announced today the start of a public comment period for the draft environmental assessment (EA) which seeks to analyze and evaluate potential impacts resulting from a proposal to lease up to 192 acres of Federal land to GPA for renewable energy projects on Guam.
The public comment period runs from May 8-27, 2015 (Chamorro standard time).
“The proposal is to design and construct solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to produce approximately 44 megawatts of electricity to convey to GPA’s grid for public use,” said GPA General Manager John Benavente. “We approached the Navy several years ago with a request to possibly utilize their properties, and today we believe we’ve reached a major milestone in our process with the publishing of this draft EA for public comments,” Benavente added.
“This collaboration further strengthens the well-established partnership that the Navy shares with GPA as we continue to work toward fulfilling mutual interests to meet clean energy goals in the Pacific,” said NAVFAC Marianas Commanding Officer Capt. Glenn Shephard. “These projects will bolster energy security and lessen Guam’s dependency on imported fuel,” said Shephard.
The draft EA is available for public review and comment at the following public libraries: 1) Nieves M. Flores Memorial Library, 2) Maria Rivera Aguigui Memorial Library, 3) Barrigada Branch Public Library, and 4) Dededo Branch Public Library. In addition, it is available on line at https://www.navfac.navy.mil/navfac_worldwide/pacific/about_us/navysolarea-guam.html.
