SANTA RITA, Guam – U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) Commanding Officer Capt. Andy Anderson is inviting former residents of Sumay village and their descendants to a memorial Mass on NBG July 17.

The event is coordinated with the Santa Rita Mayor’s Office as part of the island’s 70th Liberation Day festivities.

The Mass will be held 11 a.m. at Sumay Cemetery, followed by a luncheon hosted by the mayor’s office.

Sumay village was once known as the “Pearl of the Island” before World War II. Evolving from a small fishing village to the agricultural and commercial hub for ships in the mid-1800s, it became an economically rich village by the 1930s. In recent years, the NBG commanding officer has invited former residents and their descendants to hold a memorial Mass as part of Liberation Day ceremonies.
