Troops stand proud during Guam USO's annual salute
TUMON, Guam – Service members were honored during Guam USO's ...eighth annual Six-Star Service Salute at the Hyatt Regency Guam Resort and Spa in Tumon May 25.
This year’s theme, “I’m Coming Home,” emphasized the ethos of the Guam USO, said USO Pacific Vice president Carly Harris.
“Tonight’s message ‘I’m coming home’ is a sentiment held deep in the heart of every service member and their families,” she said. “The USO family ensures that these words are true for all who enters the Guam USO center.’”
Harris said military leaders are facing challenging times from defense and budget stand points.
“Now more than ever, they need our support as an organization to lean on – to help provide the comfort and quality of life that our military families who sacrifice so much, have earned and deserved,” Harris said.
The event’s atmosphere fused the civilian and military communities with conversation, good food, music by Hawaiian music legend Henry Kapono.
“On Guam, you can tell there is a sense of brotherhood and tight ties with the community,” said Aviation Ordnanceman 2nd Class (AW) Tyler McGee, Naval Munitions Command East Asia Division Unit Guam. “It’s nice to come out here and mingle with the community. And it does give you that family away from home. Being so far away – it’s nice to have that.”
“The USO is prepared to welcome home more of our deployed forces as they say, I am coming home,” said Harris.
The conclusion of the event featured the recognition and awarding of five Service Members of the Year and the Guam USO Volunteer of the Year.
