USS Ashland to conduct community relations projects during visit

ASAN, Guam (Aug. 3, 2015) – Sailors and Marines from the amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland (LSD 48) will spend a portion of their port visit giving back to the community of Guam during the dates and times below:

  • Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon: Sailors will work alongside the Umatac Mayor’s Office to clear debris from village’s roads and storm drains in anticipation of possible heavy weather during the current rainy season.
  • Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Sailors and Marines will help prepare Juan M. Guerrero Elementary School for the upcoming school year.
  • Aug. 6 from 8 a.m. to noon: Marines will work with the Yigo Mayor’s Office to clear pathways to the Chagui’an Massacre site in preparation for the memorial ceremony this weekend.  

Ashland, homeported in Sasebo, Japan, is the eighth and last of the Whidbey Island-class ships to be commissioned and the second U.S. Navy ship to bear that name. She is on patrol in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations with her crew of more than 500 Sailors and Marines.
