USS Emory S. Land to Hold Change of Command Oct. 21
POLARIS POINT, Guam -- The submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) will hold a change-of-command ceremony Oct. 21, 2016 at 10 a.m.
Capt. Douglas A. Bradley will relieve Capt. Mark A. Prokopius and become the 25th commanding officer of the Emory S. Land. Rear Adm. Frederick J. Roegge, commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, will be the guest speaker for the ceremony.
Prokopius has commanded Emory S. Land for more than 14 months. Under his leadership, Emory S. Land successfully completed a five-month deployment, executed a homeport shift from Diego Garcia to Guam, and assumed lead maintenance responsibilities on the Guam waterfront, successfully completing several extensive maintenance availabilities for forward-deployed submarines.
Prokopius will report to the staff of Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic following Emory S. Land’s change of command.
Emory S. Land, commissioned July 7, 1979, is named for Vice Adm. Emory S. Land, who served in both world wars and made significant contributions to submarine design. Emory S. Land is one of two forward deployed expeditionary submarine tenders homeported in Guam, conducting maintenance on submarines and surface ships in the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operations. Measuring 644 feet long and displacing more than 23,000 tons, Emory S. Land is manned by a hybrid crew of Sailors and Military Sealift Command (MSC) civilian mariners totaling more than 700 personnel.
