SANTA RITA, Guam – Right from the game’s first play, it was apparent Guam High football was determined to turn Tuesday’s heartbreak into Saturday’s joy.

Terry Geller returned the opening kick 88 yards for a touchdown, sparking the Panthers to a 54-0 romp over Southern and a share of first place in the Interscholastic Football League with Father Duenas Memorial, who edged the Panthers 15-14 on Tuesday to ruin Guam High’s bid for an unbeaten season.

“A great way to come back,” Panthers coach Jacob Dowdell said. “After a frustrating loss like that, you can either feel sorry for yourselves or come back and show who we are, and we did.”

The Panthers “executed in all three phases of the game,” Dowdell said, and some second-line players also got a chance to display their abilities.

The starters played only the first half, with Lorden Aguon going a perfect 5-for-5 for 205 yards passing and a touchdown. Juwon Jacobs caught three passes for 100 yards, including a 50-yard TD, and had nine tackles. Tegan Brown added 15 tackles and Cabe Robit 10. Robit also ran 10 yards for a touchdown.

Among second-unit scoring plays, J.J. McCloud returned an interception 65 yards for a score, Royce King hit Juwan King for a 50-yard scoring pass and Demetrius Willingham ran for a 45-yard touchdown.

Victoria Davis became the first girl in Guam High football history to run the ball, two times for 8 yards. Freshman Katey Cox tried two field goals, missing each try.
“All in all, I was very happy, very proud of them,” Dowdell said.

Coupled with Father Duenas’ 3-0 overtime upset loss Friday to last-place Okkodo, Guam finds itself back in the race for the regular-season championship and the first-round playoff bye.

Guam needs to win at John F. Kennedy and hope that Simon Sanchez (3-1) can beat the Friars (4-1) on Oct. 5 for that to happen. Guam beat Simon Sanchez by forfeit the first week of the season and would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker edge for the season title and first-round bye.
