The 4th annual Guam International Film Festival (GIFF) has arrived. The week-long cerebration of independent cinema art will be held at Agana Center Stadium Theater from Sept. 23 to 28.

GIFF will showcase independent films from all over the world. More than 50 films including drama, comedy, documentary and animation will be shown during the festival. The mission of GIFF is to foster the growth of cultural identity and understanding through the art of filmmaking. GIFF aims to unify, celebrate and showcase to the region and the world, the collective experience through the universal medium of film, according to GIFF official website.

“This year is unbelievably amazing,” festival programmer and co-founder Kel Muña is quoted as saying on the site. “Along with the best in independent cinema from around the globe, I’m proud to announce that this year we have eleven official selections in the Made in the Marianas category. This is a new GIFF record for local and regional filmmaking in relation to the Marianas.”

Festival officials have received more than 400 submissions from over 50 countries for GIFF 2014, so far. Films to be showcased include a record-breaking 11 Guam-related films – the most to have ever been produced in the span of a year. There are also 21 world premiers, 11 international premieres, 4 U.S. premieres and 15 Pacific-Asia premieres. Events, awards and film workshops will also be held during the festival.

One film in the Marianas category is “Across the Water in Time,” directed by Guam native, Jillette Leon-Guerrero. The movie retraces the family tree of John Paris, who died in 1928 in Honolulu where he is buried next to his wife at historic Kawaiahao Church. With no knowledge of his life beyond Hawaii, Yolanda Paris Sugimoto reaches out to a researcher on Guam 80 years later to uncover her great-grandfather’s roots. The ensuing research takes the two on a journey across the ocean and back in time with surprising results.

GIFF’s centerpiece film is the Japanese drama-comedy “Cicada,” directed by Dean Yamada that will show Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. “Cicada” was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize, Best Narrative Feature at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.

The epic underwater adventure “Revolution,” featuring wildlife from the coral reefs in Papua New Guinea to the rainforests in Madagascar, will close out the festival. The film was produced by Gus Van Sant, director of “Goodwill Hunting” and “Milk.”

According to GIFF organizers, other festival highlights include:

  • Family Shorts Showcase and Family Animation Showcase featuring free award-winning family-friendly short animations and short films from around the globe on Sept. 27 and 18.
  • A free “Art and Commerce” class by creative advertising firm Pivot
  • Encore screenings of the Muna Bros. feature length documentary, “Talent Town”
  • The free GIFF mobile app available on Google Play for Android and soon in the App Store for iPhones that lets filmgoers easily plan their week of films and events. It also has an interactive scheduling tool and can access film synopses, photos, trailers, screening times, venues and more.

Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy and celebrate the diverse creativity of Guam’s own international film festival.
