Guam, October 12, 2018 - Animal lovers are in for a treat this weekend, with two large pet-focused events taking place this Sunday, October 14.
“2 Fast, 2 Furriest” 5k and 2k doggy dash
Sunday, Oct. 14, 5am event start (6am race start), Hagåtña
GAIN is proud to partner with Subaru for this Sunday’s “2 Fast, 2 Furriest” 5k and 2k doggy dash. The event will be held on Sunday, October 14th, at the Paseo de Susana Park in Hagåtña. Activities will kick off at 5:00 am, with the race starting at 6:00 am.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Subaru and Prestige Auto for this fun event,” said Ana Babauta, member of the GAIN Board of Directors. “We welcome everyone, with or without their pets, to come out and raise awareness for animal welfare on Guam,” she added.
While similar to a traditional 5k race, “2 Fast 2 Furriest” will also include a 2k route for those with dogs. Doggy water stations will be positioned along the race route, and GAIN volunteers will have adoptable dogs available for a meet-and-greet after the finish line.
The first 1,000 race finishers will receive a dri-fit race shirt by Run Guam, and the first 200 doggy finishers will receive a race bandana by Run Guam [Photos Attached]. Registration also includes automatic entry into the end-of-race raffle.
“Proceeds from the event will go to help the GAIN non-profit shelter, and its island-wide spay/neuter program” said Ms. Babauta. “With all the recent abuse cases, we feel this race is also a positive way to promote healthy animal care on-island,” she added.
Race registration is $15 for individual runners, and $40 for a group of 4 runners, if purchased in advance. Registration will be $20 per runner if paid the morning of the event.
Register online at www.guamanimals.org/5k, or in-person at any of the following locations: Prestige Auto, Fetch, Unified Fitness, AK Toyota, Run Guam, and the GAIN Animal Shelter.
GAIN thanks its incredible sponsors for this event. The Title Sponsor is Subaru. Gold Sponsors are: SPPC, Outrigger Resorts, AK Toyota, Nanbo Insurance, and the Law Office of Vanessa Williams; and Silver Sponsors are: Goodyear, and PCR Environmental.
Annual Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, Oct. 14, 10am in Upper Tumon
A special “Blessing of the Animals” ceremony will be held at St. John the Divine Episcopal Church in Upper Tumon this Sunday, Oct. 14, at 10am.
This annual event honors the Patron Saint of Animals, Saint Francis of Assisi, whose feast day was earlier this month. In remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures, churches worldwide welcome pets for a special “Blessing of the Animals” ceremony.
Pets are welcome for this Sunday’s 10am blessing. There is no limit to the size or type of animal as long as they are pets, domesticated, and not dangerous around people or other animals. All pets must be on a leash or in a kennel.
The service starts at 10am and is approximately one hour long, with the blessing of animals occurring towards the end of the service and lasting around 5 to 10 minutes.
GAIN, which will have representatives at the event, reminds people to ensure their pets are comfortable in new environments and around other animals before attending. “We’re thankful for this annual event, which is a powerful and moving way to honor the pets that enrich our lives,” said Cyrus Luhr, GAIN Board President.
