The annual Great Guam ShakeOut is an island-wide earthquake drill organized by the Offices of Homeland Security and Civil Defense in collaboration with the Southern California Earthquake Center in an effort to conduct the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history. On October 20, 2016 at exactly 10:20 a.m. (ChST), participants will practice their earthquake procedure; “Drop, Cover and Hold On” as advised by the Great ShakeOut organization. The drill will last for one minute. Island residents will join over 20 million ShakeOut participants from across the U.S., Hawaii, British Columbia, CNMI, New Mexico, Puerto Rico, Southern Italy, and other various regions.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (OHS/OCD) encourage all residents to increase earthquake preparedness and response by practicing how to protect themselves during an earthquake and how to ensure an earthquake disaster does not become a catastrophe. The ShakeOut participation provides the opportunity to evaluate emergency plans, increase awareness of earthquake safety, and improve resiliency within your community. Last year, over 83,000 participated in the drill across the island. This year, we want to break that record!

To participate in this year’s ShakeOut, register at http://www.shakeout.org/guam. The ShakeOut website provides drill manuals, tips on earthquake safety and other resources for developing a disaster plan. Participants may register as an individual, as a family, school, business, or other group and are encouraged to share photos of their ShakeOut experience on the Great Guam ShakeOut website. On your social media, include #GreatGuamShakeOut in the caption of your picture.

During the drill, local FM/AM stations will be providing live drill broadcasts. The staff of OHS/OCD will be participating at different locations during the drill to include: Agana Heights Elementary, Harry S. Truman Elementary School, Westin Resort Guam, and K57 radio station.
