Groups to discuss impact of Live-Fire Training Range Near Ritidian
(Hagatna, Guam) Independent Guåhan has partnered with Prutehi Litekyan to present the group’s fourth teach-in on Thursday, March 16 to raise awareness about the environmental and social impacts of the planned live-fire training range near Litekyan.
At stake are the last mother Håyun Lågu tree on Guåhan and the pristine limestone forest that provides critical habitat for other endangered species found only on Guam and the Mariana Islands. The live-fire training range would also limit access by fishermen and Guam residents, especially Native landowners who trace their lineage to this northern region.
Prutehi Litekyan recently launched a campaign urging elected officials to provide oversight regarding the management and protection of our endangered species, over 40 ancestral sites at Litekyan, Jinapsan, Urunao, Haputo, and our precious water resource.
The teach-in will include topics of:
- Background of resistance, indigenous rights, and land issues
- History of landowner struggles
- Displacement of Native people
- Live-Fire Training Range Impacts
- Legal and extra-legal approaches
- Mobilizing the youth
The teach-in will be held Thursday, March 16 at the University of Guam CLASS Lecture Hall from 6 – 8 p.m.
Independent Guåhan empowers the Chamoru people to reclaim our sovereignty as a nation. Inspired by the strength of our ancestors and with love for future generations, we educate and unify all who call our island home to build a sustainable and prosperous independent future.
Prutehi Litekyan: Save Ritidian, a direct action group dedicated to the protection of natural and cultural resources in all sites identified for DOD live-fire training on Guam, opposes the establishment of any military firing range, stands in solidarity with Guardians of Gani’, PaganWatch, Tinian Women’s Association, and Alternative Zero Coalition by preventing environmental degradation and destruction on sacred and native lands, and promotes the continued pursuit for return of ancestral lands.
