Guam Breastfeeding Awareness Month

The Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) is pleased to announce August 2014 as Guam Breastfeeding Awareness Month. 

In participation with the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), the members of the Guam Breastfeeding Committee is adopting this year’s theme “Breastfeeding: A Winning Goal for Life”. The committee members are taking actions to raise public awareness that breastfeeding as the “norm” and to promote Guam Public Law 32-098, “Nana Yan Patgon Act”, signed November 27, 2013. The committee plans to get the message out through media interviews, billboard advertising, breastfeeding decals, t-shirts, health fair, flash mob, breastfeeding songs, commercial videos, bus stop adoption and a movie show.

To celebrate this event DPHSS and the Guam Breastfeeding Committee in partnership with Non-Communicable Disease Consortium announce the following activities:

• August 1, 2014 at 10:30 am a Proclamation signing and joining the Big Latch-On Campaign at the Governor’s Office in Adelup

• August 1, 2014 at 4:40 pm a Breastfeeding Wave at 4:30 pm at the ITC Intersection, Tamuning

• August 9, 2014 from 10 am to 2pm a Breastfeeding Awareness Health Fair in the Center Court of the Micronesia Mall

• August 10, 2014 at 3:30 pm a “The Milky Way” Movie, Every Mother Has a Story, GPO Regal Cinema, Tamuning

DPHSS encourages the island community to promote and support breastfeeding as the normal and optimal feeding choice.  Breastfeeding is considered as “evidence-based practice” by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and “Best Buys” by the World Health Organization to protect our babies against illnesses such as ear and respiratory infections, allergies and support optimal brain development and keeps babies and children healthy.  Diabetes, cancer and heart problems are dramatically lower among breastfed babies and their mothers.
