(Tumon, Guam) – Friday, April 1, 2016 – With the fourth annual Guam International Marathon only days away, plans are firmly in place to host Guam’s largest international sports event. Guam Sports Events, Inc. (GSE) along with Gold Sponsors Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB), United Airlines and Pacific Islands Club (PIC), are ready to host the biggest and most memorable sports event on island.

GIM will be on the world’s running stage beginning on April 8 and 9 when international runners arrive and begin picking up their packets at the GIM Expo at PIC to prepare for the April 10 Guam International Marathon at the Joseph F. Flores Memorial park (Ypao Beach) in Tumon. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to host Guam’s signature running event.

Four Race distances – Tehre’s a race for everyone – 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Full Marathon. More than 1,200 cones will line the courses to guide runners.

A True International Experience – 3,000 runners from 21 countries have registered for GIM, some from as far as Norway and Africa. With online registration closing on April 5th, there’s still time to be a part of this international group.

Aid Stations – There are 15 Aid Stations that can be found at every one mile increment along the course, and each station is sponsored by a private company or organization and their volunteers. Runners will be able to find 32 portable restrooms and 2 Cooling Stations at various Aid Stations.

Hydration and Fuel – On race day, the Powerade team and volunteers will fill more than 110,000 paper cups with more than 246,000 ounces of water and 197,000 ounces of Powerade. 7,000 bananas will also be consumed.

Volunteer Driven – On race day, GIM will count on each of its 800 volunteers to help make the event a safe and memorable one for participants and guests. Volunteers assist at the GIM Expo, start line, along the race course and at the Finisher’s Beach Festival.

Community Supported – GIM relies on the synergy of organizers, 25 sponsors and Government of Guam agencies such as the Guam Fire Department, Guam Police Department, Department of Public Works and the Department of the Parks and Recreation to plan the event. On race day, up to 50 police officers and 10 GFD paramedics will stand by to assist runners.

More than a Run – Live entertainment is scheduled throughout the entire 3 days of festivities, beginning with the 12,000 square-foot GIM Expo on April 8 and 9 at the PIC Pavilion, culminating with the Finishers’ Beach Party and Award’s Ceremony, which are all open to the public. All this adds up to making GIM 1 Hafa Adai Experience!
