Guam Territorial Band kicks off season
In addition to the Guam Symphony Society celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, the Guam Territorial Band is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Just like the Society, this is also an all-volunteer community band consisting of musicians from middle school to senior citizens. Currently, approximately 40 wind instrument players, along with string basses and percussionists are performing under the direction of Maximo Ronquillo, Jr., the group’s chief band master and music director.
“The players include lawyers, university professors, business owners, construction industry, federal employees and educators,” Ronquillo said. “To the members of the GTB, symphonic band music is part of our life and heritage. We aim to continue the band tradition so we may pass it on to the next generation.”
The band has grown somewhat the past few months, and now has a GTB North that is more central to those folks in the northern part of the island.
“We are aiming to have two fully viable bands in order to give more opportunity to the island’s young people to build their musical skills,” said Brandon Aydlett, a band master of the group.
They also have an ongoing band academy for the younger people who are looking for more development with musical theory.
“Rehearsals are intended to give any of Guam’s youth an opportunity to play new music with the GHB, culminating with performances in March at the Tumon Bay Music Festival,” Aydlett said.
“Since I became the music director in 2001, my focus has been to bring music to our people,” Ronquillo said. “We play a variety of Christmas performances annually at hotel lobbies, shopping malls and occasionally at the Agana Cathedral.”
According to Aydlett, in 2017, GTB will have its annual Tumon Bay Music Festival in early March, and soon after, it will be traveling to the U.S. to perform at the New York Invitational Music Festival at Carnegie Hall on Mar 24. Prior to its arrival in NYC, the band will be spending a few days in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, for several days of rehearsals and a concert in the town.
