"Music & Prayers for Peace"
In conjunction with the celebration of the Arts and Humanities on Guam, The Guam Territorial Band – official band of Guam, USA will be presenting a public concert “MUSIC & PRAYERS FOR PEACE” on November 23, 2013, 7:30pm at the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica – Agana, Guam. This event is free and open to the public.
The award-winning band will present music from James Barnes, Peter Tchaikovsky, Jean Sibelius, Charles Gounod along with inspirational and prayerful music several from movie soundtracks. They will be joined by the award-winning choral groups Cantate! and the Ateneo de Manila Glee Club alumni of MAGIS, several solo guest artists, and an all-star cast of orators. Audience members will also have an opportunity to sing along on a few pieces.
The Governor’s Youth Band was formed in 1976 as a marching band to represent Guam at the Inauguration of President Jimmy Carter in 1977. The band was renamed the Guam Territorial Band in 1982 and has become one of many arts and humanities ambassadors for Guam. The Band is the 2005 Australian International Music Festival First Place/Gold Award Winner – Instrumental Division. In addition they performed as a contingent of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Band. Most recently, the Band was invited to return for an encore performance at Carnegie Hall in March 2012 as part of the New York International Music Festival. The Band has been invited back to the Sydney Opera House for a performance in July 2014. They will also visit Gamagori, Japan as part of a sister-city friendship in August 2014.
