New commander takes charge of Submarine Group 7

Rear Adm. Richard Correll has taken command of the Navy’s submarines and undersea operations in the central and Pacific theaters from Rear Adm. William Merz, who led the group since March 2015.

Correll became the 45th commander of Submarine Group 7, Task Force 54 and Task Force 74 during a change-of-command ceremony Wednesday at Yokosuka Naval Base’s Benny Deck Theater.

Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin, 7th Fleet commander, called Merz — who previously oversaw Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command — his “chess master.”
