Registration is open for all interested in officiating soccer matches during the upcoming Docomo Pacific Robbie Webber Youth Soccer League and interscholastic leagues.

Guam Football Association welcomes all, with or without prior refereeing experience, to participate in various courses this month. Enrollees must be at least 14 years old to be considered as a referee.

“With the growing popularity of the sport in Guam, GFA would like to increase its roster of referees to help meet the demand for matches,” said Simie Willter, GFA Referees Administrator and one of three course instructors. “For players in particular, developing as a referee can really add another dimension to their game. New and current referees will learn the Laws of the Game, proper positioning on the field, when and how to make calls, and match management among other topics.”

The Beginners Course starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday from 2 p.m. The beginners’ course primarily is for new referees without any prior officiating experience and current referees officiating at the U10 level. For Saturday’s practical session on the field, all enrolled must bring cleats and a whistle.

For those with previous experience as a referee, a novice course will be held beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 17. Enrollees will need to bring yellow and red cards to the sessions. Cleats and a whistle are required for the practical session, which begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19.

For referees who have previously officiated U14-level matches, a refresher course will be held Sept. 19 and 20, both sessions beginning at 6:30 p.m. Those registered for the refresher course must bring yellow and red cards, cleats and a whistle.

The beginners’ course, novice course and U14 refresher courses will be facilitated by Rhoda Bamba and Willter. A separate interscholastic middle school referee course will be facilitated by instructor George Stewart. The middle school course begins Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and continues Thursday, also at 6:30 p.m. The middle school course can be a substitute for the U14 refresher course for qualified referees.

Qualified referees who attend courses will receive paid assignments for the upcoming youth league and interscholastic league.
