On Oct. 3, the Coast Guard Enlisted Association Marianas Islands along with the Coast Guard Marianas Wardroom will sponsor the second annual Coast Guard Foundation’s Run to Remember. The event has benen rescheduled due to the recent heavy weather including Typhoon Soudelor.

Last year was the first year we sponsored the Coast Guard Foundation’s Run to Remember event on Guam.  As a “unique” 5K on the island, it consisted of an amphibious obstacle course.  In order to finish, participants had to run, swim, crawl and jump over a myriad of obstacles in a fun and challenging 5k course.  This year we have more surprises in store. It’s not just your average 5K!

Run to Remember honors Coast Guard members that face danger every day in the line of duty. Many have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. Together we honor those brave individuals who have given their lives so others may live. Across the globe, thousands are honoring these heroes through memorial walks, road races, climbing challenges and more.

The Coast Guard Foundation’s Run to Remember has become a rallying point for over 60 events that honor the fallen heroes of the Coast Guard.

Thousands around the globe will participate in events honoring fallen Coast Guard heroes. But this year, two Coast Guard rescue swimmers, Jason McGrath and Jon Houlberg, are planning a special effort. They will be climbing Mt. McKinley in Alaska to raise funds and awareness for the Run to Remember.

These events are some of the most important and significant efforts the Coast Guard Foundation undertakes. They help raise funds for emergency assistance to the families of those who have died in the line of duty, including the cost of college for children.

In addition to raising critical funds, each participant in a Run to Remember campaign knows they are honoring a fallen hero. Every step taken, every effort made is for them. In fact, special commemorative T-shirts bearing the names of the brave individuals who sacrificed it all are proudly worn by participants.

We strongly encourage interested participants to register early for this year’s Run to Remember on Guam. Early bird registration is $25, runs through 18 September and includes an official Coast Guard Foundation Run to Remember (Gildan dryblend) T-shirt.

Online registration is on the Guam Run to Remember Facebook page (www.facebook.com/events/681608008610341). There is also a direct link on Eventbrite (www.eventbrite.com/e/cg-run-to-remember-guam-tickets-17690431557).  Those who wish to register in person can also take advantage of early bird registration at Gof Metgot crossfit gym or Hornet Sports.

The Coast Guard Foundation is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of the men and women of the Coast Guard and their families. Founded more than 40 years ago, the Coast Guard Foundation provides education, support and relief for the brave men and women, who enforce maritime law, protect our homeland and preserve the environment. The Coast Guard Foundation aims to strengthen their service to our nation by encouraging them to excel on- and off-duty.

We are thankful for those brave men and women who daily give so much so we can be safe.
