(March 14, 2018 Tumon, Guam) -- United Airlines Guam Marathon (UGM) organizers Guam Sports Events, Inc. (GSE) hosted a press conference on Wednesday, March 14th at the Pacific Islands Club in Tumon to relay important information and exciting new event features as the event nears. UGM will take place on Sunday, April 8 at the Gov. Joseph F. Flores Memorial Park (Ypao Beach) in Tumon. GSE, joined by title sponsor United Airlines, gold sponsors Pacific Islands Club and the Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB), welcomed community partners and special guests to receive updates and preview the exciting events planned before and after the race.
“Registration for UGM has been steady, and we expect the numbers to increase leading up to the race. Our team is ready to welcome more than 4,000 local and visiting runners to Tumon from April 6 to 8 for another great event,” said Ben Ferguson, Founder and Director of United Airlines Guam Marathon.

UGM offers four distinct race distances – 5k, 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon. All races will begin on San Vitores Road and will end at the Ypao Beach finish line, steps from the beautiful waters of Tumon Bay. As in the past, a portion of registration fees will be donated to local community beneficiaries. This year’s recipients included the Guam Fire Department, Guam Police Department and the United Service Organizations (USO), who were also in attendance.

Paula Monk, United Airlines Senior Sales Manager - Guam and Micronesia said “United is proud to return as the title sponsor of UGM 2018. United will be celebrating 50 years as Guam’s hometown airline, and we can’t think of a more fun way to kickoff our celebration than at UGM giving away round trip tickets at the beginning of each race. We’ve also worked with GSE and GVB this past year to promote the event overseas in markets such as Japan, Korea and China. We look forward to seeing everyone’s efforts come full circle at the event.”

As part of the press conference, event organizers highlighted race features such as the UGM runners perks program, Eat. Shop. Run., which begins on Monday, March 19 and lasts through April 15. In its second year, the program allows runners to redeem special offers at popular restaurants and retailers by simply showing proof of race registration. GSE also showcased the new event app designed to keep race participants informed, on track and engaged.

“GVB is proud to be a founding partner of UGM,” said Nate Denight, President and CEO of GVB. “Events such as UGM are great for Guam. They bring our local community and visitors together for an ‘Only of Guam’ experience. We look forward to welcoming runners from all over the globe for this event. April is typically a slow month for visitor arrivals, but thanks to UGM, we had a record month in 2017. That’s how sports tourism works for Guam.”

Kicking off the race festivities is the popular Hafa Adai Expo on April 6 and 7 at the Pacific Islands Club. Expo highlights include a running seminar from Japan Race Ambassador, Naoko Takahashi, Olympic Gold Medal Winner from Japan; shopping for event merchandise, and the latest in running gear and apparel; live entertainment; food and beverages; and vendors showcasing Guam’s Hafa Adai spirit. The expo is also the pickup point for race packets. Ferguson, who is also the General Manager for PIC, invites the public to attend the free expo.

On race day, the public is also invited to cheer on participants along the race course and to celebrate at the post race BBQ Beach Party at Ypao Beach Park.

Ferguson emphasized, “A big feature of the event is that runners finish their race at the beach with a BBQ Beach party and a dip in the ocean, also known as the UGM Tumon Bay dip. A good majority of our runners are returning participants, so they help to keep this tradition alive.”

He added, “I’d like thank our sponsors for their valuable support and the many volunteers who will be taking care of our runners on the course and at our 15 aid stations. We also couldn’t do this without our partners in the community – Guam Police Dept., Guam Fire Dept., Dept. of Public Works and Parks and Recreation. They help to make this event successful and safe for all.

Registration is still open. Interested runners can register online until April 3rd at unitedguammarathon.com.
