With funding from a grant from the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency, Guampedia has written our region’s important historical events into the context of world events with an online timeline.
“We often think of events happening in Micronesia as separate and apart from the rest of the world,” said Shannon Murphy, Guampedia’s managing editor. “Most textbooks seldom mention our part of the world. With the creation of this new dynamic timeline, it is hoped that those interested in learning our history can get a better grasp of the sequence of world and regional events that have brought us to where we are today.”
The Guampedia team decided to include not just historic events of Guam and the Marianas for the timeline, but of the entire Micronesia region to bring our history, separated for so long by world forces, back together to give us a better grasp of who we are as a region.
Murphy said it is Guampedia’s hope that this timeline, which can be easily added to, will help students of history see the bigger picture and develop a context for historical thinking.
The Guampedia timeline begins in 2500 BC when the Egyptians built the Sphinx and ends in 2018 with the Guam Museum’s opening of its permanent exhibit “I Hinanao-Ta Nu Manaotao Tåno’-I CHamoru Siha: The Journey of the CHamoru People.”
There are 184 items in the Timeline with many bits of history that they hope people find intriguing. More will be added as history unfolds.
A poster was created for the project by graphic artists Kie Susuico as well which will be distributed to educators island wide.
Guampedia, Guam’s Online Encyclopedia, is a community project that highlights the unique Chamorro heritage and history of Guam and the Mariana Islands. Through peer-reviewed entries and accompanying media, Guampedia provides an important educational and informational resource for Guam teachers and schoolchildren, for Chamorros living away from Guam, for visitors to our island, and for those who want a richer understanding of our island and its people.
Guampedia, Inc. is an independent nonprofit organization established in 2009. The organization is led by a volunteer Board of Directors and a small, but dedicated, staff that maintains the Guampedia website (www.guampedia.com
) and organizes its activities.
