500 Sails boatyard Open House/Preparations for Sail to Pika Festival
Saipan, CNMI – February 6, 2019 – 500 Sails is planning to sail two of their traditionally designed canoes, Neni and Richard Seman, to this year’s Tinian Pika Festival. The canoes will leave from the Guma Sakman, where they will be stored, and give rides to Pika Festival attendees. This will be the second year for 500 Sails to be part of the festivities on Tinian. Exact dates and times will be announced later based on weather conditions.
Open Houses will be from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both Friday, February 8, and Saturday, February 9. The location is the 500 Sails boatyard in the old procurement building right next door to DLNR in Lower Base. This is a chance for the community to come see six canoes at different stages of construction. Stop by and see what 500 Sails has been preparing for the community.
Master Navigator, and 500 Sails board member, Cecilio Raiukiulipiy will captain one of the canoes going to Tinian and will be selecting crew from the 500 Sails Train the Trainers program and members of the seafaring family here in Saipan.
The construction of Neni and Richard Seman was made possible by support from the Northern Marianas Humanities Council, the Administration for Native Americans (ANA), and the CNMI Department of Lands and Natural Resources (DLNR).
