500 Sails Lalayak: Sailing classes start April 11

500 Sails

Saipan, CNMI – April 6, 2021 – The Lalåyak Project uses a curriculum of basic sailing skills developed by Master Navigator Cecilio Raiukiulipiy and 500 Sails Co-Founder Peter Perez. Classes are taught by previous cohort members, 500 Sails staff, and Cecilio as available.  We are looking for people willing to give back to the community as instructors in future Lalåyak classes. Let’s continue to revive the sailing traditions of the Marianas by working together!

These Lalåyak classes are a perfect addition to the Sunday Sails program run by Master Navigator Mario Benito that takes place from 10am-2pm, giving rides and introductory sailing experiences to new sailors.

What: Lalåyak (Sailing Classes)
When: Classes start April 11, 2021 from 8am-10am (before Sunday Sails program) and end May 23, 2021
Where: All classes take place at Guma Sakman.
Who: Adults and teenagers with parental consent
Cost: All classes are FREE!

There are seven classes. Three of the classes are on land, four in/on the sea. In addition, 10 practice sails must be completed as crew.

Final exams – both a written test and a practical test must be passed in order to be certified as “mågus” (skipper) or crew. Final exam is scheduled for June 20, 2021.
