Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guam to continue on as Mañelu

We are excited to announce a change in our organization that will bring greater opportunities to the youth and families that we serve through our mentoring and family programs. After much discussion, assessment and consideration between the Board of Directors and staff, the decision was made to disaffiliate from Big Brothers Big Sisters America (BBBSA.) Our organization and programs will continue on under our new name Mañelu.

Although Big Brothers Big Sisters has a remarkable program, it is modeled after an urban or suburban population. Disaffiliating and localizing the programs would be better suited to effecting change in our island’s unique community. Throughout our 16 years of service, we have expanded our programs to not only include one-to-one mentoring but working with and supporting local and migrant families. Our work in the communities has shown us that in order to fully support our youth, we must also support, empower and educate the family.

BBBSA did not provide financial support to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guam. Disaffiliation means that we will keep 100% of our funding on island because we will no longer pay affiliate fees. We have always been and will continue to be funded by local and federal grants, and through corporate and personal donations.

Mañelu, in Chamorro, means Brotherhood and Sisterhood. We believe this strongly defines our mission and the relationships we build with our members. Our current programs, including our mentoring, community and migrant programs will continue without disruption. We also have plans to add additional programs and services in the future.

We will be celebrating the launch of our new organization name with a wave on Wednesday, November 14th starting at 4pm in Hagatna across from Chamorro village. We will also be celebrating the holiday season with our annual Breakfast With Santa event on December 1, 2018, 9am-12pm at the Chamorro Ballroom in the Pacific Star Resort & Spa. Tickets are on sell at the Pacific Star Resort & Spa, Synergy Studios in Hagatna, The Boka Box, and online at www.eventbrite.com.
