LGBT Pride Month was established by Presidential Proclamation in 2000, and is held annually to recognize the importance of diversity, as well as the many achievements of LGBT individuals. This year's theme is celebration, and calls Americans to eliminate prejudice and celebrate diversity.
Members of the diversity committee, along with guest speakers, shared their experiences during a ceremony on the mess deck about the importance of diversity.
“LGBT is important to me because it recognizes a lot of individuals that weren’t able to express themselves in the past,” said Legalman 1st Class Diamond Harris, a native of Detroit, Frank Cable’s diversity committee president. “I personally didn’t realize how stressful it was for an individual to cover up who they really are, in order to blend in with everyday life and not be afraid to be who they really are.”
Events like the diversity committee’s pride event helps Sailors in all different ways.
“Events like this are important so individuals can feel more comfortable and confident with themselves and with what they are capable of doing, as well as strengthening relationships among the crew,” said Information Systems Technician 3rd Class Michelle Gonzalez.
Leadership aboard Frank Cable encourages and supports Sailors to come out and commemorate the progress being made towards equality, while highlighting the importance of diversity in the military.
“These moments we take to celebrate the people who make up our Navy are important as we celebrate the uniqueness of those around us, but also celebrate that they are among us and are working to make us stronger, by adding their variety to the group,” said Capt. Drew St. John, Frank Cable’s commanding officer. “But it also opens our eyes to the variety that is among us and hopefully helps us each to learn and grow in our understanding of the wider world around us.”
