Guam Community College and the Department of Public Health & Social Services have teamed up to provide mandatory training for daycare directors, assistant directors and lead providers throughout the month of August at GCC.

Starting on Saturday, August 5, and continuing every Saturday in August (12, 19, and 26) from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 41 directors of day care and child care centers, and two in-home providers are learning about proper ways to teach young children through the Early Childhood Education Winning Formula Institute presented by world-renowned consultants Dr. Laura Souder and Dr. Samuel Betances.

“By the age of three, a child who is read to and engaged in stretching conversations has been exposed to 30 million more words than a child who has not had the benefits of a language-rich home environment, and that information is invaluable for child care professionals,” noted Dr. Souder. She and her husband, Dr. Betances, use their patented “winning formula” to teach early childhood care providers how to encourage positive growth and development among Guam’s youngest citizens.

The training is funded by a Child Care Development Funds Department of Public Health & Social Services grant, and is mandated by PL 31-73 Appendix A (Guam's Plan for Professional Development (GPPD) of Early Childhood Care Professionals, which defines the essential knowledge, skills and competencies required of early childhood professionals working with children ages zero to five years.

The training is provided through GCC’s Continuing Education and Workforce Development Office, and successful participants are earning 3.2 Continuing Education credits (CEUs). The training is taking place in GCC’s Multipurpose Auditorium (Building 400).

The GCC Continuing Education & Workforce Development Office will send announcements of all upcoming CCDF trainings via email and flyers to the 41 day care centers and two in-home providers on island.
