(May 17, 2019, Hågatña) — The Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) joined the Guam Election Commission (GEC) in the capital village of Hågatña for a very special Håfa Adai Pledge Ceremony on May 16, 2019.

Guam Election Commission’s Executive Director, Maria Pangelinan, spoke on behalf of the commission about their excitement and reasons for taking the pledge. Pangelinan noted that the GEC sees the importance of taking the pledge as a way to perpetuate the CHamoru culture and to encourage residents to embrace their civic duty through voting.

”Our goal is to encourage more residents to become registered voters, and we can do that by demonstrating the Håfa Adai spirit. For every single voter and every single stakeholder that comes to the GEC, we truly practice and live the Håfa Adai Spirit,” she shared.

The Håfa Adai spirit can be felt through the team’s welcoming spirit and the many beautiful cultural displays throughout its office -- flowers, carvings, and artwork adorn the office for all to enjoy.

The GEC event is part of the Håfa Adai Pledge Program’s 10th anniversary celebration, which is taking place throughout the year.

GVB’s Public Information Officer Josh Tyquiengco said, “We have grown tremendously throughout the last 10 years in large part to our community’s deeper embrace of the CHamoru culture and language. Today, we have welcomed more than 920 businesses, organizations, schools, and individuals, which represents about 43,500 individuals. GVB is proud of the strength of our membership and invite everyone to become a part of  our Håfa Adai Pledge familia.”

GVB invites more agencies, businesses, organizations, schools and individuals to take the pledge. GVB will be offering opportunities to take the pledge each day at the Guam Micronesia Island Fair from May 29 to June 2 at the Plaza de España. Free Håfa Adai Pledge Kids activities will be offered in the Plaza’s Gazebo.

Un dankulo na si yu'os ma'åse' to the Guam Election Commission for sharing the Håfa Adai Spirit with our community and continuing to promote Guam’s culture by making the island a better place to live, work, and visit.
