Guam's Sister March to the Women's March on Washington Jan. 20
January 17, 2017 — Joining in a worldwide movement to stand in solidarity for the protection of “our rights, our safety, our health, and our families”, Guåhan will host Fanohge Famalao’an — a sister march to the Women’s March on Washington.
The Women’s March on Washington is being organized by women to bring together “people of all genders, ages, races, cultures, political affiliations and backgrounds … to affirm our shared humanity and pronounce our bold message of resistance and self-determination,” according to the march’s guiding vision. The official Women’s March on Washington will take place on January 21, the day after Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration. In solidarity with the march, women around the world are organizing sister marches. More than 370 sister marches have been planned thus far.
“In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore,” reads the March’s mission statement (https://www.womensmarch.com/mission/). “The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.”
Fanohge Famalao’an will take place this Friday, January 20, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Marchers are asked to meet at the Chamoru Village in the Paseo parking lot (playground side). They will then march to the “Women of the Islands — Three Generations” monument next to the Alupang Beach Tower and back to Chamoru Village. All members of the community are invited to attend and bring their own solidarity signs/posters and reusable water containers.
