(Guam, Jan. 24, 2018) - The Society for American Military Engineers (SAME) announced today that Mr. Masafumi Yamakawa, Director of the Guam Relocation Project Office, Japan’s Ministry of Defense, is confirmed to speak at the Guam Industry Forum from March 7 to 9, 2018 at the Dusit Thani Guam Resort. Director Yamakawa will provide participants with an overview of Japan’s support of the military build-up program on Guam.

John Robertson, President of the Guam Post of the Society of American Military Engineers, sponsors for the Guam Industry Forum said, “SAME Guam Post is pleased to announce the confirmation of Director Masafumi Yamakawa from Japan’s Ministry of Defense and the Director of the Guam Relocation Project Office as a key speaker at the Guam Industry Forum. Director Yamakawa will provide attendees an inside perspective of Japan’s support of the buildup program on Guam, as well as Japan’s commitment of billions of dollars to collaborative projects with the U.S. to complete this program.”

The joint initiative between Japan and the United States is both unique and demonstrative of how the U.S. will be working with its international partners in the defense of Asia and the interests of the United States. The collaboration between Japan and the United States makes the relocation of the US Marine Corps forces to Guam one of the largest U.S. defense design and construction initiatives in recent time. During the last year, more than $300 million in military contracts have been awarded to contractors, which are anticipated to trigger several billions of dollars in design, construction, and other service investments.

SAME Guam Post has secured a robust lineup of government and private sector participants. Governor Eddie Baza Calvo will discuss what the relocation of the US Marine Corps forces will mean for Guam, and Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo will speak about the purpose and importance of expanding U.S. military facilities on Guam.

Rear Admiral John Korka, PE, CEC USN Commander, NAVFAC Pacific will be one of the keynote speakers during the forum. Rear Admiral Korka will cover the buildup, what we know today; moving forward together, Navy and industry partnership; and why Guam.

The goal of the forum is to provide information associated with construction and development opportunities for businesses from Guam, the U.S., Japan and throughout Asia. One of the sessions will include a panel discussion about the bidding processes and procedures and how businesses can prepare competitive proposals.

Robertson added, “All local businesses who have any interest in learning how they can be a part of Guam’s military buildup on Guam should attend this forum. Registration and event details can be found on our event website.”
