The Liberation Hike and Bike to be held July 21 on Guam

Guam Veteran Service Organizations

GOT YOUR SIX SEVEN ONE, INC. (GY671) is a nonprofit organization seeking to empower Veterans, Spouses, and children with the transition into civilian life through resources, Unity, Camaraderie, and Knowledge. GY671 is dedicated to helping Veterans on Guam regain self-confidence, develop a strong support system, and improve their overall well-being both mentally and physically. We had each other’s back overseas and it continues now that we have returned home.

The Liberation Day Hike and Bike will consist of the following events:

  • Veterans and Family Members Memorial Hike
  • Veterans and Family Bike Ride Hagatna-Asan-Hagatna
  • Outdoor games with social distancing, sanitizing, and other CDC guidelines enforced

The Liberation Hike and Bike is designed to bring Veterans and their families together using humor and camaraderie to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide. We do this while celebrating our islands most revered holiday, Liberation Day, celebrated on July 21st every year.

The hike event starts at the War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Asan and ends at the Statue of Liberty at the Paseo Park with multiple stops along the way. The route will have the group pass the invasion landing beach park near T-Factory followed by a lap around the front of the Ricardo J. Bordallo Governor’s Complex in Adelup. Here, the group will visit the new Guam Seal Monument, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Latte of Freedom. The next stop will be at the Military Order of the Purple Heart Monument at Skinners Plaza followed by a visit to the Chief Kepuha and Great Seal of Guam Parks. The bike event starts at Paseo meeting the hikers at Adelup and a loop down to Asan. Finally, the entire group will meet at Skinner’s Plaza (MOPH Monument) and then on to the Statue of Liberty at Paseo Park. The event begins with a meet at 0700hrs and a step-off at 0730hrs.

Once the hike and bike are completed, a few ceremonial events will take place in addition to outdoor games designed with humor in mind and that is designed to build camaraderie amongst the Veterans. The uniform for the day is meant to be humorous by encouraging Veterans to hike or bike in “Silkies”. These are the short running shorts normally worn for PT (physical training) with a tank top, knee high socks, and boots. However, if you so desire, please dress according to your preference.
