AGAT, Guam (Dec. 14, 2016) Nearly 200 Christmas gifts ranging from dolls to toy cars, and even a plastic pool, were delivered to Marcial Sablan Elementary School in Agat Dec. 14 as part of the Tree of Hope program.

Cmdr. William C. McCool Elementary/Middle School counseling team launched the program as part of its outreach to the local community.

“Our school has partnered with Marcial A. Sablan Elementary School and they have sent us Christmas wish lists of 70 of their neediest students,” said McCool Counselor John Camacho. “We hung one ornament for each of the students participating, and then reached out to our students and their families to choose an ornament and sponsor a child.”

Families that pulled an ornament received the assigned child's wish list and purchased one, two, or all three requested gifts. Each wish list had one need and two wishes. If families chose to purchase one gift, they were asked them to purchase the need. If they chose to purchase two, they were asked that one of them be the need. Some families chose to purchase all three, and some chose to purchase more than what was listed, Camacho said.

Camacho said they initially got the idea to launch the program from Guam High School, who also sponsored a Tree of Hope.

“We recognize DoDEA's critical role in the local community, and thought this was a great way for our school system to reach out and connect with the public school system,” Camacho said.

The program was spearheaded by the guidance counseling team at McCool, but so many of the faculty, staff, students and their families showed their support in one way or another.

“If families didn't get the opportunity to pull an ornament, they showed their support by donating gift wrapping paper, tape, or simply wishing us well on this project,” Camacho said.

The program was launched on Nov. 23 and the response was rapid and overwhelming, he said.

Various student organizations volunteered their time to wrap gifts and several students helped deliver the gifts to the school.
