AGAT, Guam (April 20, 2015) – Representatives from U.S. Naval Base Guam’s (NBG) environmental division visited students at NBG’s sister school Marcial A. Sablan Elementary School in Agat April 20.

BRITE, the Department of the Navy’s energy mascot, was in attendance and served as a visual aid to help promote Earth Month.

“Children, if they learn (conservation) early, they will live their life that way,” said NBG Energy Manager Derek Briggs. “Children can go back and talk to their parents (who) will want to set an example for their children and will change their behavior as well.”

The presentations focused on energy conservation, renewable energy and energy-saving tips students can implement in their lives to conserve our earth’s natural resources.

“If I teach someone who’s 40 how to save energy, that’s a good thing,” Briggs said. “(But) if I teach someone who’s 7 to save energy, that person will be saving energy a lot longer.”

Principal Geraldine Pablo said she is always delighted to partner with the base as they are the school’s sister command.

“It’s very important to develop a positive relationship, a collaborative relationship with the Navy so we can partner and provide resources for our students,” she said. “It is important for our students to learn about energy conservation at a very young age because it will foster positive habits in them so they can become more aware of their actions that affect our environment.”

NBG’s environmental division and other Navy volunteers will be at the school throughout the week to promote Earth Day with events such as an art judging competition April 23 and biologist career presentation April 24.
