Navy collaborates with local and federal partners during Sixth Annual Programmatic Agreement Workshop
ASAN, Guam - Collaboration and partnership among stakeholders and signatories of the 2011 Programmatic Agreement (PA) were common themes at the 6th Annual PA Workshop hosted by Joint Region Marianas (JRM) on Thursday, May 24, at the Sen. Antonio M. Palomo Guam Museum and Education Facility.
The workshop is a requirement of the 2011 PA and is a work session reserved for the signatories and concurring parties of the PA and Department of Navy guests.
“The collaboration and discussions that come from this meeting are meant to benefit the entire One Guam community, not just the island’s military; and to give place for the concerns and values of all Guamanians who call our island home,” said Rear Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, commander of Joint Region Marianas.
During the day-long event, the Navy team provided presentations on the progress made over the last year in a variety of significant areas. It also served as an opportunity for all parties to evaluate important achievements, assign tasks and review outstanding requirements.
The achievements since the last PA Workshop, which was held in 2017 include: securing funding for the Guam Cultural Repository; hosting more than 50 site visits and accommodating more than 100 participants on tours of Public Access Program cultural sites; delivering cultural awareness training to more than 2,500 government contractor employees and completing the research, publication and distribution of public educational books which detail the history and culture of Guam as uncovered by archaeological work on federal lands.
“The impact of our efforts here cannot be understated,” said Chatfield. “Guam has a unique and rich cultural history and working together on how to best preserve that archeological record is essential for all of us here and now in this room, around the island, the region, and for future generations.”
Annual PA Workshops are intended to encourage and facilitate productive dialogue for participating parties to focus on best ways to preserve, protect and learn from Guam's cultural resources.
