Prutehi Litekyan student members hold Peacefully Rally
September 25, 2017, Mangilao, Guam - Prutehi Litekyan: Save Ritidian student members are holding a peaceful rally on Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m at the University of Guam's SBPA Building Atrium. The outreach event will feature an informational table, where fact sheets will be passed out about the impacts of the proposed firing range to our island. There may also be participating students holding signs that showcase their views on the issue and a march around the campus with signs.
Prutehi Litekyan is a direct-action group that is trying to stop the destruction of Northwest Field and Litekyan, which is also called Ritidian. The military wants to use Northwest Field and Litekyan for a live fire training range complex, even though their own studies say that having the proposed firing range at this location will bring the most harmful impacts to the environment and culture both in its construction and operation. At risk is our water supply (northern lens aquifer), the endangered plants and species, archaeological sites, ancestral grounds & burials, claim to the land by original landowners, and the ocean that surrounds northern Guam; the firing range complex would negatively impact the coral, the marine ecosystem, and fishing access in that area. Much is at stake.
Prutehi Litekyan has been informed that the military can start bulldozing land up north in Finegayan, Dededo as soon as Monday, Sept. 25, which is why this urgent rally is so critical. This rally is being held in an effort to raise the level of urgency with the Legislature and our political leaders to take action to stop this destruction to our island. Our governor and congresswoman have been silent for too long.
Our leaders pay attention to college students because one of the key traits of college students is our voting – we are current and future voters, and we are the future of the island. The current leaders of the island are going to be inclined to listen and pay attention to what we as college students are saying and doing.
With that said, Prutehi Litekyan is collaborating with the UOG student body and organizations to join in solidarity, use their impact, and show their support and concern against the firing range to STOP plans for it from moving forward.
Prutehi Litekyan: Save Ritidian is a direct action group dedicated to the protection of natural and cultural resources in all sites identified for DOD live-fire firing training on Guam. We oppose the establishment of any military firing range and align our efforts with other regional movements working to prevent environmental degradation and destruction on sacred and native lands. Our work promotes the continued pursuit for return of ancestral lands.
