Sailors visit Guam, volunteer in community

ASAN, Guam (March 19, 2015) –Sailors of USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62), USS Sampson (DDG 102), and USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) will arrive for a port call in Guam and will volunteer in the community.

While on island, Sailors will volunteer their time as a way to give back:

• Island Beautification –Sampson and Fitzgerald Sailors will participate in a beautification project with the Island Beautification Task Force at Tanguissan Beach March 20, 9 a.m. to noon.

• Saint Dominic’s Senior Care Home – Fitzgerald Sailors will visit Saint Dominic’s to spend time with residents March 21, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

• Friends of the Park– Michael Murphy Sailors will work with community volunteers from Island Girl Power to beautify a Dededo park March 21, 9 a.m. to noon.

Fitzgerald is a guided-missile destroyer forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, and assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15. It was commissioned Oct. 14, 1995, and was named in honor of Lt. William C. Fitzgerald.

Sampson is the fourth U.S. destroyer named after Rear. Adm. Thomas Sampson who commanded the North Atlantic Station during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The ship is homeported in San Diego and is part of U.S. Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet and U.S. 3rd Fleet. 

Michael Murphy, homeported at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, Hawaii, is a guided-missile destroyer named for Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL and a New York native who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during Operation Red Wing in Afghanistan in 2005. Murphy was the first person to be awarded the medal for actions in Afghanistan and the first member of the U.S. Navy to receive the award since the Vietnam War.
