School-time resources for military kids

by Kim Suchek

Hello Military community,

Summer is officially over and the new school year has arrived for our children. There are two resources I recommend that military families should be familiar with and use. Both I have found to be exceptional for military kids.

Military Kids Connect is a Department of Defense website designed to help military children support one another and learn coping and resilience-building skills that will help them thrive amid the many changes and trials of military life. The site is broken up into age categories to help users find age-appropriate information.

They have tough topics videos, stress management, arts and craft ideas, printable activities and online games and an awesome comic book maker. Look for the comic creator under the “tell your story” section.

This is also a resource to share with educators and your caregivers as there is a section for them as well as parents. The educator section has lesson plans, military culture videos and information on how to work with military children. Explore this great resource at: is a service that provides online tutoring and homework help at no charge to all K-12 students in National Guard, Reserve and Active Duty military families thanks to funding from the DOD Moral, Welfare and Recreation Library Program and Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program.

Many adults are also eligible for college and career transition help. for military families allows students to connect to a live tutor online at any time for one-on-one help with homework, studying, test prep, proofreading and more.

Every tutor is a carefully screened expert. They have a team of more than 3,000 certified teachers, college professors, graduate students, select undergraduates from accredited universities and other professionals. All tutors are put through a rigorous application process which includes extensive background check and a probationary period before an applicant becomes a certified tutor. Students and tutors always work anonymously and no personal information is shared during sessions.

Regardless of where a military child attends school, students worldwide can access the online service using any internet-enabled device, including smart phones free 24 hours a day, seven days a week – no appointments needed. provides all skill levels in key courses in math, English the sciences, social studies world languages and more than 40 other subjects.

I hope all your children and youth are supported during your deployments and new duty stations, which includes getting resources to schools they are and will be attending. If you are looking for something which has not been provided, please contact me for direction.

Blessings from my family to yours,
