Senator Respicio calls on Governor Calvo to oppose relocation of Syrian nationals to Guam

by Senator Respicio's Office

Senator Respicio calls on Governor Calvo to push Washington for a moratorium on sending any Syrian war refugees to Guam because of security concerns arising from the terrorist attack in Paris.

November 17, 2015– Senator Rory J. Respicio has urged Guam Governor Eddie Baza Calvo to oppose any relocation of Syrian nationals to Guam unless there are “firm assurances” that they will not pose any threat to the safety of the people of Guam.

Senator Respicio, Majority Leader of the Guam Legislature was concerned by reports that a Syrian passport was found by the body of a terrorist killed in Paris Friday night. He further noted that 24 state governors have already objected to any of the proposed 10,000 Syrian refugees being sent to their states.

“In light of this situation, I believe it is essential that Guam raise its own concerns regarding this proposal if for no other reason than to forestall any efforts to take advantage of our colonial status and impose on us the responsibility of accepting Syrian migrants that almost half the state governments have rejected,” Senator Respicio wrote in his letter to Governor Calvo.

“I therefore respectfully urge you to communicate to the federal authorities our community’s objections to the settlement of any Syrian refugees on Guam until intelligence and defense officials can provide firm assurances that the vetting process is sufficiently strong enough to ensure the safety of our people.”
