DEDEDO, Guam – Marking a significant milestone in the suppression of brown tree snakes on Guam, Joint Region Marianas with its local and federal partners, conducted an aerial bait application at Andersen Air Force Base, Oct. 1 and 4.

“Unlike past efforts of aerial brown tree snake suppression, the purpose of this project is the significant suppression of snakes from the 136 acre habitat management unit at Andersen Air

Force Base” said Albert Borja, environmental director for Marine Corps Activity Guam.

The area is surrounded by a snake exclusion fence and is an interagency test site established for biological resource studies, including invasive species control and forest restoration. This effort will inform the long-term goal of eradication of brown tree snakes.

The long-term benefit of a snake-free area is the creation of refuge habitat for the future recovery of federally listed native avian species like the Guam Rail, Guam Kingfisher and Mariana Fruit Bat. Results of this project will be used to inform future management decisions for brown tree snake suppression on a larger scale.

Naval Facilities Engineering Command Marianas, MCAG, University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service,

Wildlife Services, USDA National Wildlife Research Center, and U.S. Geological Society are all part of this coordinated interagency conservation project for the planned Marine Corps relocation from Japan to Guam.
