SANTA RITA, Guam (June 24, 2019) – U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) Commanding Officer Capt. Jeffrey Grimes is inviting former residents of Sumay village and their descendants to a memorial Mass on NBG July 20.
The event is coordinated with the Santa Rita Mayor’s Office as part of the island’s Liberation Day festivities.
The Mass will be held 11 a.m. at Sumay Cemetery, followed by a luncheon hosted by the mayor’s office. Former Sumay residents and descendants may contact the Santa Rita Mayor’s office at 565-4337/2514 to arrange access for the Mass.
Sumay village was once known as the “Pearl of the Island” before World War II. Evolving from a small fishing village to the agricultural and commercial hub for ships in the mid-1800s, it became an economically rich village by the 1930s.
