Super Typhoon Bavi delivered extreme winds and heavy rains to the United States’ westernmost territories Monday morning, and a direct impact on the small island of Rota.
Bavi, the second strongest storm of the typhoon season, thus far, slowly crept past the other islands of the Northern Marianas — Tinian and Saipan — and Guam with maximum sustained winds of 180 mph, according to National Weather Service updates on Monday. A total rainfall of between 12 and 20 inches was expected throughout the day.
The NWS described the storm as “catastrophic” and “life-threatening” with widespread destructive winds and extreme eyewall conditions.
