Tumon – August 30 – Guam Sports Events, Inc. announced today the results for two of Guam’s elite runners who participated in the Fujiyoshida Himatsuri Road Races held in Japan on August 28. Ryan Matienzo and Meara McCarthy, represented Guam at the Japan road race after capturing top resident male and female marathon spots in the 2016 Guam International Marathon, recently renamed the United Airlines Guam Marathon when United Airlines signed on as the title sponsor for the 2017 event.

Matienzo and McCarthy competed in the challenging half marathon course that starts at the base of Mt. Fuji and twists and turns up the mountain. Matienzo finished with a time of 1:27:03.  McCarthy placed 6th overall in her division with a time of 1:38:13.

Guam’s annual participation in the Himatsuri Road Races is part of a 20-year relationship with the Japan Amateur Athletic Federation and the Japan Track & Field Association. The Himatsuri Road Races is recognized as one of the more difficult half marathon races in the Pacific region that also offers 3.5K, 5K and 10K race distances, all of which ascend parts of Mt. Fuji.

“We would like to congratulate Ryan and Meara for their fantastic finish at the Himatsuri Road Races,” said GSE Managing Director Ben Ferguson.  “They effectively competed in a race that is known to have a great degree of difficulty due to its incline that also takes place at an altitude that Guam’s runners must quickly overcome. Ryan and Meara’s finish, along with our long-term participation it this road race, allows us to showcase the high level of runners that come out of Guam’s local running community.”
