United Airlines Guam Marathon unveils Runners' Oasis and other race perks

United Airlines Guam Marathon

(Feb. 28, 2019-- Tumon, Guam) Guam Sports Events, Inc. (GSE), organizers of the United Airlines Guam Marathon (UGM), unveiled The Runners’ Oasis in Tumon to enhance the overall UGM experience. The Runners’ Oasis is a newly designed area complete with a vibrant and motivating mural, designed and painted by two local artists, Austin Domingo and Kristine Leigh Bactad. The artists worked for a few weeks to design the space to reflect the theme, “Run in Paradise”, and to create a beautiful and inspiring spot where runners can physically and mentally prepare for their run.

As the seventh annual UGM event draws near, GSE, title sponsor United Airlines, and gold sponsors Pacific Islands Club (PIC) and the Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) invite runners to start and end their training at The Runners’ Oasis, a multi-purpose space in front of the Pacific Island Club parking garage. Runners can park, stretch, meet up with friends and cool down after a workout.

Ben Ferguson, Managing Director and Founder of Guam Sports Events, Inc., said “Each year, we try to add to the UGM experience. The Runners’ Oasis is another way that participants can interact with other runners while they train for the 2019 UGM race. We encourage them to share training tips and help our visiting runners feel welcome.”

The UGM Runners Oasis is open and available to local and visiting runners. Race organizers developed the space to be a centralized location that also allows runners to simulate the out and back course. It includes space to stretch, benches to rest and shower to rinse off. Organizers tout that it is the perfect location for running groups to gather. There’s a great chance that runners will catch a glimpse of UGM ambassadors Manami Iijima, Leo Tkel, Rhea Macaluso and Derek Mandell training there.

“It’s a very welcoming space, built with Håfa Adai spirit in mind, and will be a great photo opportunity to promote our island before and after the event,” Ferguson added. “We are thrilled that runners are already enjoying the space and taking photos in front of the mural.”

Registration is ongoing for the four race distances – 5K, 10K, half marathon (13.1 miles) and marathon (26.2 miles) – at unitedguammarathon.com. UGM is scheduled for Sunday, April 14, 2019 at the Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Park (Ypao Beach) in Tumon.

More Runners’ Perks

UGM also announced that the event is currently offering group training opportunities through training partners HÅTSA Guam and Unified Fit. Information for these training programs can be found through the event website and the free UGM app.

Gatorade, the official drink of UGM 2019, launched its pop-up UGM X Gatorade Hydration Station near the Sandcastle Guam on Feb. 27, and will be posting up in Tumon on the following Wednesdays: March 6, 13, 20 and 27. Exact locations for the hydration stations will be confirmed each week through the event’s social pages.
