ASAN, Guam – Sailors of USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) will volunteer their time during a port call on Guam.

Sailors will help a local non-profit organization spruce up a park in the Kaiser, Dededo area located on Guinaiya Court just off Santa Monica Avenue, Aug. 30, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The project is part of the Island Girl Power “Friends of the Park” program. Sailors will help revitalize the park by removing debris, clearing land and painting a basketball court.

Sailors will also participate in an Island Girl Power community garden project, Sept. 1, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The community garden located on the Island Girl Power compound at the intersection of Ysengsong Road and Santa Monica Avenue in Dededo will give the public a therapeutic and recreational outlet in an area where they can also grow their own produce.

Fitzgerald is one of seven Arleigh Burke-class, guided-missile destroyers forward deployed to Yokosuka, Japan, and assigned to Destroyer Squadron 15. It was commissioned Oct. 14, 1995, and was named in honor of Lt. William C. Fitzgerald.
