USS Frank Cable Conducts Sexual Harassment/Equal Opportunity Training

POLARIS POINT, Guam (NNS) -- Sailors aboard the submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) completed equal opportunity and sexual harassment training, April 10 through May 2.

Sailors are required to complete the training annually. This face-to-face training is facilitated by the Command Climate Specialist (CCS), and the Command Managed Equal Opportunity managers (CMEOs).

On the Frank Cable there are three CMEOs: Chief Machinist's Mate Justin Burke, the Repair 2 Leading Chief Petty Officer; Chief Gunner's Mate Remus Feliciano, Weapons Leading Chief Petty Officer; and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Sergio Madrid. Frank Cable's CCS is Chief Machinist's Mate Benjamin Finona.

Giving training in person rather than on a computer can be a better way to reach Sailors throughout the fleet.

"I say that a computer may be able to give the training, but it can't interact or feel," said Burke. "Many things are pointed out and discussed as a facilitated group, participation is given, questions are answered and command specific points can be addressed when the training is given in person."

This type of training is not just for service members, but something that can be applied outside of the military in the civilian world as well.

"It is important to let Sailors know that there is help out there," said Finona. "We need to let them know that CMEO's are here and available to assist in any way they can. The purpose of the training is to spread the awareness of equal opportunity and sexual harassment throughout the command so Sailors can take what they learn here, out into the world with them."

Not every Sailor will take away the same things from the training, but there are somethings that the facilitators hope they all walk away with.

"My hope is the Sailors bring back the knowledge that they have learned and spread it throughout the command," said Feliciano. "Hopefully the Sailors correct situations when they see them, and report them when they occur. We can only hope that one day with the help of the training the Navy will be free from any equal opportunity and sexual harassment wrong doings for good."

One of the main reasons for this training is to show Sailors that this type of behavior will not be tolerated and needs to stop completely.

"Discrimination and sexual harassment are corrosive, unacceptable and will not be tolerated," said Feliciano. "They are contrary to our Navy core values and negatively affect unit morale, cohesion and operational readiness. Let us all do our part and treat each other with dignity and respect."

Frank Cable, forward deployed to Guam, repairs, rearms and reprovisions deployed U.S. Naval Forces in the Indo-Pacific region.
