Broken Crayon 2016 - Please Start Collecting

by Carlotta Leon Guerrero
Ayuda Foundation

This is the fifth year for our Broken Crayon project.  Ayuda Foundation started the project back in 2012 and it has been more successful every year.

We collect items that would likely be trashed and send it to the Federated States of Micronesia where it is welcomed with enthusiasm and used with delight.

Due to severe typhoons during 2015, this year is even more important. Many of the schools have been stripped not only of learning materials but also roofs and walls.  The Ayuda Foundation has already shipped donated textbooks/library books as well as food, water, clothing, chain saws, mosquito nets, building supplies and other items donated by residents of Guam, but school supplies are still needed.

As the 2015-2016 school term begins to wind down, the Ayuda Foundation is requesting that teachers station empty small to medium sized cardboard boxes (xerox/computer sized boxes PLEASE) in their classrooms where students can donate supplies they will not need for the next school year; i.e. broken crayons, half used ball point pens, rulers, half used jars of paste, partially filled spiral notebooks, outgrown back packs, pencil stubs, still-usable colored pencils, storybooks, partially used coloring books, colored paper, water colors and brushes, scissors, half-used erasers, flashcards, etc.

Businesses/offices are invited to donate misprinted stationery, no-longer used computer paper, left-over paint, surplus office supplies (white boards, bulletin boards, paper clips, staplers/staples, etc.).

At the end of the school year, the collected donations will be shipped to our Women’s Groups who are partnered with in Micronesia – the women will sort the items and distribute them to schools.

Donations can be dropped off May 18-20 from 12-3p at JFK High School. We would especially like to thank JFKHS for their help!

NOTE: Public High School Admin - this will be a service learning event. You can direct your students still needing hours to JFKHS on May 18-20 @12-3pand on Saturday May 21 @8-12p to help us accept, organize, and load up the donations.

Donations are appreciated!
