Math. For many students, it is their worst subject. But this Friday, March 17th, Guam Community College will try to change that attitude. On that day, approximately 327 students from public and private schools will head to the GCC campus to challenge their math skills during the international Math Kangaroo. Afterward, the GCC Education Department will host a Math Carnival for the students, where they will be able to put those math skills to use in fun and exciting ways.

"We are hoping to encourage students to love math island wide," said Steve Lam, GCC associate professor and Math Kangaroo Guam manager/director.

For the past seven years, GCC has hosted the Math Kangaroo, an international math competition open to students from 1st to 12th grade. The goals of the Kangaroo, according to Lam, are to encourage students to master their mathematical knowledge, give them confidence in their ability to comprehend math, help them understand how math applies in nature's laws and human activities, and show them that math education is significant in every part of the world.

“This year marks our 8th annual hosting of Math Kangaroo,” added Carl Torres II, GCC Math Department chair. “As part of our department goal, and as members of an international community that loves math, we continue to seek ways to make math interesting and fun. The last few years that we have hosted the Kangaroo, our registration numbers have been above 300, so it is comforting to know that we are reaching the audience we are looking for. Most of these students are in the 1st - 5th grade, and this is a great way to engage their young minds,” said Torres.

The Math Kangaroo competition will take place from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. in the AALG Allied Health Center, and the Math Carnival will follow from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Student Center.

The GCC Math Carnival (11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.) will encourage the students to apply their math skills in fun and interesting real-life activities and games set up by various GCC programs and community partners.
