Farmers, farm workers, and agriculture professionals seeking licensure in pesticide application from the Guam Environmental Protection Agency are invited to a free three-day exam review workshop being hosted by the University of Guam Land Grant Extension Service with assistance from the Southern Guam Soil & Water Conservation District and the Guam Environmental Protection Agency.
The Pesticide Applicator Core Exam Review Workshop will be offered from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the UOG Agriculture & Life Sciences Building from Monday, Aug. 31, to Wednesday, Sept. 2, with an identical session from Monday, Sept. 14, to Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Pesticides are classified as either “general use” or “restricted use,” the latter of which are not available for purchase or use by the general public. Federal law requires any person who applies or supervises the use of restricted use pesticides to be certified in accordance with U.S. EPA regulations and state or territorial laws.
Guam residents can obtain a private or commercial applicator’s license by passing the exam through Guam EPA. UOG conducts exam review workshops, funded by the Pesticide Safety Education Funds Management Program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Over the three-day workshop, participants will receive a comprehensive review of all material included in the National Pesticide Applicator Certification Core Exam, including:
the laws, rules, and regulations governing pesticide use
labeling, storage, transportation, disposal, and cleanup
environmental impacts and groundwater protection
emergency response procedures
personal protective equipment and application techniques
calibration exercises and demonstrations
calculating pesticide application rates
Participants will also have opportunities to engage in calibration activities, pesticide application calculations, and exam review exercises to strengthen their understanding of key concepts.
Facilitators include UOG Land Grant extension agent Jesse Bamba, who holds a master’s in environmental science, extension associates Katherine Perez and Cecilia Pangelinan, and representatives from Guam EPA and the Southern Guam SWCD.
