Puengen Minagof Noche Buena, Christmas celebration at UOG Dec. 6

University of Guam Chamorro Studies Program

The Chamorro Studies Program at UOG Invites the Public to its 2019 Christmas Celebration, Puengen Minagof Noche Buena!

The Division of Humanities, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the University of Guam’s Chamorro Studies Program cordially invite the UOG and Guam community to Puengen Minagof Nochebuena, an evening of CHamoru cultural festivities connected to the holiday season. The celebration will take place on Friday, December 6th from 6:00 pm – 8:30 pmin the Atrium of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building at UOG. This is event is free and open to the public.

The theme for this year’s Puengen Minagof Nochebuena is “Ta Nginge’, Ta Adora” taken from the chorus for the popular CHamoru Christmas song “Fanmåtto Manhengge.” The evening’s activities will include the singing of CHamoru Christmas songs, the praying of a nobena and tables filled with CHamoru fina’mames (desserts). The traditional CHamoru Christmas treat is boñelos dågu, but CHamoru language classes will be providing a wide variety of CHamoru sweets, including a variety of flavors of boñelos.

The highlight of the evening will be a bilen (nativity scene) competition. Each CHamoru language class is creating their own version of the traditional Nativity scene and will be using local materials in the construction. Community members are welcome to come and help determine the bestbilen by donating money to each class’s taron nina’i or donation jar. Funds raised through Puengen Minagof Noche Buena this year will be donated to the non-profit Autism Community of Guam.

Please join the UOG Chamorro Studies program faculty and students for this exciting event, where CHamoru language skills and cultural knowledge are put on display for the 2019 holiday season.
